Ever felt like you have too many things going on at once? We’ve all been there. Especially if you’re a business owner running your own website. There’s so much happening all the time – web traffic, new leads, conversation rates. How do you keep track of it all?

Look, you’re busy. So don’t waste your time focusing on the wrong things. Use Google Analytics, the top SEO tool used by marketers, to stay on top of your website’s performance. Not sure where to start? Then you’ve come to the right place!

Read on to learn how to get the most out of Google Analytics.

What is Google Analytics?

It might sound scary, but we promise – it really isn’t.

Google Analytics is a free web analytics tool created by Google. It’s designed to help you analyze your website traffic.

Simple, right? Er – sometimes. For a busy business owner, web analytics are often pushed to the side. But when used correctly, Google Analytics can be the difference between a successful website and one that’s a complete dud.

Use Google Analytics to:

  • Create a hypothesis about your content performance
  • Write a data-based report that proves your hypothesis
  • Take action based on your results
  • Measure the results

So now you know what it is, we can show you how to get the most out of Google Analytics.

Set your goals

Antonie De Saint Exupery once said, ‘A goal without a plan is just a wish.’ And how true those words are – setting goals for your website is crucial if you want it to be successful.

A goal for your website could be anything. For example, increasing sales or generating more leads. Google Analytics makes creating these goals a breeze. You just need to know-how.

Log into your Google Analytics account. Then click ‘Admin.’ On the far right-hand side, you’ll see a ‘Goals’ button. Click it, then ‘Create new goal.’

You will then have a series of goal templates to choose from. There’s a few, so choose the one that suits you. Then select how you want to achieve your goal. If your aim is to generate more leads, your solution may be to direct users to a landing page.

Google Analytics will then monitor your process and report how your actions affect your goal. Just don’t forget to turn your goal on!

Discover what people are searching for

Wouldn’t it be amazing if you could somehow learn what people wanted, so you could apply it to your own website? It’s not just wishful thinking – Google Analytics can make it happen!

Chances are that you already have a search bar on your website. Good for you. With Google Analytics, you can see any internal searches on your site.

It’s easy. Start by clicking ‘Admin,’ then ‘Settings.’ Scroll to the bottom of the list, and select ‘Search tracking.’

You can now see and track anything your users type into your website’s search bar. Use this information to create new content, or to change your stock. If people are constantly searching for a service or product you don’t have, then consider offering it.

Create alerts

We get it. You’re busy. You have a website to run, a life to live, and everything in between. Who’s got time to check Google Analytics every day? Gross.

Let Google do the hard work for you. Create alerts that will notify you for anything you need to know, like:

  • Traffic spikes or drops
  • Revenue decreases
  • High bounce rates
  • Traffic plateaus
  • Drops or spikes in completions

Simply click ‘Custom alerts,’ then ‘Manage custom alert.’ Select ‘New alert’ and give your alert a name. Choose what your alert is and viola – you will now be notified every time an alarm goes off. And you can continue living your busy life.
